| A: When their son ended up in the neonatal intensive care unit, it seemed to the Sladeks that they were immersed in a foreign land being doused from a firehose propelling new terminology at full force, while praying with all their hearts that their newborn would survive. Through asking many, many questions and writing everything down, the Sladeks began to manage the onslaught of information coming their way. The process they followed became the inspiration for the guided journal series, so that other people caring for their loved ones with critical medical needs could benefit from this practical and thorough approach. Mrs. Sladek met Dr. Ruffman when both of their sons were in the third grade. As the years passed, the family friendship grew, and as more surgeries transpired, the need for the book became much more evident. Dr. Ruffman, a licensed clinical psychologist, complemented Mrs. Sladek's project management style with a positive and friendly approach. Both authors actively promote increased medical advocacy and communication through their motto: |
